African baby elephants remain in their mother’s womb for a long 22 months.  In the animal kingdom, female elephants have the longest pregnancy of any living mammal.  There are two reasons for this. One is because of the size of the new baby.  It just takes time to grow to 250 pounds before you’re born.  The second reason is all intellectual.  Big babies also have big brains, which take longer to develop.  Elephants have brains that are three times the size of human brains, so as you’ve heard, an Elephant never forgets!
