Headed Towards The Thermals
It’s February and in Yellowstone, the shadows are long and the crystalline snows are deep. The average daily temperature is minus 10 degrees F with dips in temperature to minus 44 degrees. Now is the #starving time.
#Bison #survive on little more than dried grasses that they dig for by sweeping their massive heads back and forth through the snow to uncover what little fodder there is left.
Often, deep #snow keeps the bison cut off from their winter grazing patches. When #hunger urges the herd to move or die, a lead cow will break a trail and, in single file, the rest of the herd follows in her tracks. I have never seen such will, drive and determination until I watched hunger-driven Bison cow struggle for over an hour to get herself and her herd through shoulder- deep drifts.
