This dashing looking cat may look perfectly tame but know that the Caracal is truly wild! Also called the Desert Lynx, this medium-sized wild cat is common in Africa, India and the steppes of Asia. “Caracal” means “black ears” in the Turkish language.
The Caracal’s large, tapering ears topped with long black tufts are the animal’s most distinguishing feature. The tufts help enhance the twitching-ear sign language the cats use to communicate in addition to their growling vocalizations. There was no growling or ear twitching as this large male paused briefly in the dawn light only to disappear into the bushlands with his mate near the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater.
